Dear NBOA Colleagues and Friends,

For our 21st Neighborhood Building Owners Alliance Advocacy Breakfast, we will hear from three candidates, each seeking an important different local office.

Though neither of these candidates is necessarily a front runner, they each have impressive credentials and it is worth our while to meet them.

Victor Henderson

Candidate for CPS School Board President

(election in November)

As per his campaign website, Victor “brings a long and distinguished record of leadership, integrity, and results to his campaign for Chicago Public Schools Board President.” He has served as President of the Chicago Bar Association, Outside Ethics Officer for the Chicago Housing Authority (CHA) and Counsel for the US House Ethics Committee. Victor polls as one of the top three candidates for this important office, the first time that Chicagoans are electing our City’s School Board President.

As we pointed out last meeting, the upcoming school board elections are critically important to us all, as the City needs strong representatives to stand up to the Chicago Teachers Union.

Matthew Brewer

Candidate for Mayor of the City of Chicago

(election in February, 2027)

As per his website, Matt is an entrepreneur, small business owner, lawyer, government leader, and nonprofit founder who has contributed to the city in multiple capacities, most recently as CEO and Board Chair of the Chicago Housing Authority.

Born and raised on Chicago’s South Side, Matt attended Mount Carmel High School and then attended Stanford University, where he was elected the first African American student body president in the school’s history. After college, he received the Henry Luce Fellowship and moved to Beijing, where he lived and worked in the Chinese music industry. He later earned his law degree from Yale Law School and his MBA from Harvard Business School.

In addition to his work as a nationally recognized trial lawyer, Matt is a small-business owner and entrepreneur. Along with his mom and brother, Matt founded and owns Chicago’s first and only Black-owned cannabis dispensary.

Michelle Pennington

Candidate for Metropolitan Water Reclamation District Commissioner

(election in November)

Though we in the neighborhood multifamily industry rarely focus on MWRD races, we invite Michelle because of her background since 2007 operating a successful real estate investment business. Per her website, Michelle “has hands-on experience reading complex financial statements, evaluating capital expenditures, and making hard decisions that balance long-term value with near-term cost.

Michelle will explain the importance of having someone with a real estate background serve as an MWRD Commissioner.
