The Committee on Housing and Real Estate will likely vote on Mayor Johnson’s Protecting Renters Ordinance next Wednesday, September 16 at noon. This one is close enough that it could go either way.
The #1 way for you to help us oppose the PRO Ordinance is to call your Alderperson as soon as possible. Our link below makes it super easy.
.At this critical juncture, we ask for everyone who resides or owns multifamily properties in the City to click the link below, which will connect you by phone with your Alderman’s office. Simply identify yourself and your property address. State that you vehemently oppose the PRO ordinance, and then you may include an additional comment. You could say “There is nothing in this Ordinance that makes housing more affordable.” Or “Just Cause Eviction forces you to renew to bad tenants.” Or you can point out that requiring housing providers to pay substantial amounts in relocation assistance deprives you of the funds you need to operate and improve your property.
Our bottom line: be sure your alderperson knows you are strongly opposed to PRO — a phone call is far more impactful than a written email, though we urge you to do that as well.
The Mayor’s ordinance adds new registry fees on apartments, along with a new Bureau of Rental Housing Services with enforcement authority. It layers on more than 100 complicated new rules and regulations, with steep new fines for paperwork mistakes or noncompliance. Its Just Cause provision requires hoursing providers to renew the leases of tenants who disturb, harass, or engage in criminal activity towards neighbors — the only way out is winning an eviction in court, which almost never succeeds on these grous, or paying up to $7500 in relocation costs.
This ordinance makes it more expensive to provide housing at every turn higher fees, more paperwork, less control over who stays in your building — and those costs land on the residents who depend on you.
You can’t make housing more affordable by making it more expensive to provide housing.
